I was impressed by the cover of this album, always a sucker for beautiful artwork and clever packaging! Whilst the album itself matched the beauty of the sleeve it also left me a bit cold. If this had been the first gothic/symphonic album I'd bought, or had bought it after hearing Liv Kristine singing on 'Nyphetamine' by Cradle of Filth, I would no doubt have been raving about it. However, as a fan of Lacuna Coil, Therion, Without A Face and other heavier symphonic bands this one just fell a bit flat in comparison. I'd describe this as more like Evanescence than, say, Nightwish, the singing is pleasant but not very strong, certainly not operatic (although I'm not a big fan of over-operatic vocals)and the mix of the album seems to fade the instruments a bit too much into the background. It just feels like the guitars can't punch through the mix, which is a shame because the vocals badly need their support! If you're a fan on classical and choral music and are unsure about the symphonic metal genre it would be a good ease-in to what is a wonderfully complex but maybe intimidating genre. Unfortunately it's more likely that you'd find out about Leaves' Eyes coming from the metal side (like I did) in which case you may well find this a bit lacklustre (like I did!).Read full review
