I purchased a new W520 on an Amex member deal and love it. It's a beast; heavy & large, but fast and a great screen. However, the one I purchased was a Dual-Core and so could only handle 16 GB of RAM. I wanted a true desktop replacement for what I do. I am a tech consultant and run several VMWare guest OS's as well as MS's Visual Studio 2010. The guest OS's include SQL Server, Exchange Server, AD, DNS and two or three processor, disk and ram intensive legal-specific applications. I needed a lot more ram and disk space to really do my job. The gentleman who customized this quad-core Lenovo did a fantastic job. He added a second hard drive and an 80 GB mini SSD. I modified his configuration when it arrived by switching my boot drive from my W520 and continued using all my installed software, but was able to take advantage of the 80 GB mini SSD and the second drive. The new screen also supported a higher resolution than the one on my original W520. There are 4 total USB ports; 2 USB 3 ports, 1 powered USB 2 and a combination USB 2 (non-powered) and e-SATA port. There are several other ports, including a Display Port which I use for my external monitor when working from home. The included 2 GB video card (as well as the on-board Intel video) makes running multiple screens in the highest possible resolution a snap. Just a great machine. I also own a Dell and the display is far and away better than anything I have seen Dell put out. It's almost as good as my Mac Book Pro (almost!). I can see using this machine for at least 3 years. That's a long time in my business and well worth the investment in a solid, high-performance desktop replacement.Read full review
Specifications on my machine: i7 2720QM - 2.2GHz quadcore /w hyperthreading Quadro 2000M + Intel HD 3000 /w Optimus 8 GB 1333MHz RAM, now 12GB Works very well with Autodesk Inventor, MatLab, COMSOL MultiPhysics, ect just as I expected when I bought it. If doing heavy tasks it really helps to have it plugged in, as the power saving features throttle it when it operates on battery. Still a very capable machine on battery tho. The 1080p display is also a lifesaver and has quite good gamut and color correctness. There's a bit of banding in the shadows even with a fair .icc profile, but unless you're a professional photographer who does all your work on a laptop it's more than adequate. I haven't done a serious calibration tho. As far as I know the W520 is the last of the "real" ThinkPads (oldschool keyboard ect). This was really a big factor in my considerations, as I've always loved the old ThinkPad look and feel. Also the option of adding an mSATA SSD is just.. Best idea ever. Brings it op to 3 drives when I replace my DVD drive with an HDD in the ultrabay. All in all, I love my new, old, computer.Read full review

Higher performance than same priced new models, many interfaces, excellent chassis (durable, though light), easy to add/replace parts. Last model (T520, W520...) with the old-style Lenovo keyboard, which has much better layout than following T530 models. The keyboard light is almost useless on this model but this is of no concern to me. This model supports m-SATA SSD, which is great for use as a system drive. Thus you can have up to 3 drives in your laptop: m-SATA, standard HDD slot and UltraBay slot (instead of DVD drive, which I do not use at all).
I am very happy with the Lenovo Thinkpad W520 mobile workstation. The machine is fast, has good features, and a very durable case. I would highly recommend the Lenovo Thinkpad series.
If you want more laptop for your money, then you can't go wrong with the Lenovo ThinkPad. They are relatively inexpensive because they are ubiquitous, and they're durable, reliable, and powerful.
