This book tells you all you need to know about the early BR Modernisation plan DMU's whose clean, warm, bright interiors wowed more custom back to the railways on lightly used rural lines. The sets are covered in detail area by area, with copious monochrome and colour illustrations, including unusual events like passengers de-training onto the railway line in Wales because of a broken axle, and steam propelling a disabled Derby unit. Many enthusiasts despised the cars at the time, as they took away the interest of locomotive workings, but now they are history they are better appreciated, and we have even managed to preserve a few of these pioneers. Sadly they didn't manage to save all the branch lines from closure. The book is good value for money and is difficult to put down, especially if you remember life in the 1950's and 1960'sRead full review
