This action-packed book explores Lincolnshire's rich RAF history - in particular the crucial role it played during the Second World War. Get ready to travel back in time to the days when the skies above Lincolnshire never ceased to throb with the drone of departing and returning aircraft. It might seem hard to imagine it now, but at the peak of wartime aviation, Lincolnshire was home to some 46 military airfields. These airfields covered an estimated 30,000 acres of the county, accommodating 80,000 RAF personnel, including squadrons from America, Australia, Canada and Poland. Britain's most famous airmen of all, the Dambusters, had their base here. Each of those airfields is described here, and details of its wartime function given. Also highlighted are the many and varied aircraft that comprised the operational units. Numbered among them are the Lancaster, Manchester, Hampden, Wellington, Hurricane, Spitfire and Beaufighter. A superb memorial to tall those who served in Lincolnshire during WW11
This book, far from being a listings of the various sorties and aircraft lays each section down with a personal feeling towards each and every airfield, aircraft and person that where involved in this historical and fascinating era of our history. The author must have spent years studying this particular subject and this is shown in the way it is written. I have been looking for some kind of history towards some of these airfields at which my my grandfather served. In later years I had the honour of being a member of the Royal Air Force and I was lucky enough to be stationed at two of the stations in Lincolnshire, Swinderby and Scampton, and it is wonderful to be able to gain a potted history of these sites in World War 2. Great series
I read a review which described the series as very poor and with very little information within. I do not know what that reviewer was expecting because I found the book a complete opposite. Whilst I have only browsed through it there is a great deal of historical information within along with photos for each of the airfields described with the aircraft and squadrons also. I look forward to getting into it and others in the series.

Many young men made their final contact with earth from this richly agricultural area. Now mainly returned to nature with most evidence of history expunged. Great memories of those gallant lads retained in print and illustrations .
