30 years later, it's not exactly like they are young and vital, but Lou Reed and his band , including Steve Hunter playing brilliantly throughout, do manage to bring this masterpiece to life in a convincing and emotional way. Lou performs in his best cool manner, also respecting the original songs and not being too insouciant with his delivery. At times he seems almost emotionally affected as if it's all really autobiographical. Great songs played tightly by a good band keeping true to the dynamics of the original music. The literate nature of the songs suits Lou's mature, well creased persona and there's great poignance in the looking back. It's all framed by Julian Schnabel in an effortless production which spins in the Brooklyn Youth Choir, Antony, Sharon Jones and lots of Caroline's 'moments in time' played by Emmauelle Seigner and shot by Lola Schnabel. But, the real point is the music and I was thrilled to see and hear it performed so well. A real roller coaster ride of disturbed feelings and disfunctional beauty. Perhaps it was a blessing that it hadn't been played live for 30 years. Plus, there's also the bonus of a brilliant selection of encore songs (Candy Says with Antony: brilliant), which make you wish it would never end.Read full review
