ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCIENCE FICTION BOOKS, VERY DIFFERENT FROM MOST OTHER SYFI. A VERY COMPELLING STORY LINE. ONE OF THOSE GREAT READS YOU HATE TO SEE COME TO AN END.

This book was hammered! The pages are degraded, dark tan with oxidation. Hard to read the print. Overall the book was pretty dirty and worn. Looked like it had been stored in the back window deck of someone's clapped out buick... Meh, it was a very well-used book. This is not totally the sellers fault. It's a hard book to find and I was overall glad to get a copy.

I loved this book, when I read it 20 years ago, and all the times I've read it in between then and now. I've seen native people in different parts of the world living what we call "Primitive", lifestyles, natural shelters with dirt floors, the only water was what they carried from the stream, carried with hand made pots, the only food was what they caught or grew. I consider those people survivors. Most people in what we know as "Civilized society", have no clue how to survive in the event of a cataclysmic event that has world wide disastrous effects such as a massive comet strike to the earths surface. Read this book several times and you will always wonder if you could make it. A comet strike is a fact of life waiting to happen, it just hasn't gotten to us yet, they have hit earth before, and they will hit again, truly a life changing natural event. For an interesting companion book, read "Survivors", by James Rawles. A man made event with similar results. I'm not a survival nut, but you have to wonder, do you have enough food and water to last, and a way to protect it? Don't care? read these books.Read full review
Long before scientists began looking at the possibility of a comet ending all life on Earth, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle got together and wrote, in my opinion, the best "End of the World" story ever written. With much detail Niven and Pournelle tell how Lucifer's Hammer (A comet) hits the earth creating the ultimate disaster for mankind. Millions are killed in the initial impact, and those who are spared face the ultimate challenge of surviving the end of life as we know it. I first read this book when it was released in 1977, I recently picked up the book again and was struck by how far ahead of their time Niven and Pournelle were when they wrote this story. The attention to detail in the lives of the books stars is outstanding and the attachment you form to the survivors only make the reading all the more enjoyable. If you have not read the book, do yourself a favor and read it. If you have already read the book, consider reading it again. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a great story. Rated 5 of 5 for a great story line and fine writing.Read full review
Good story. I read the book years ago & remember it was great but i've forgotten a lot. After watching well enjoyed movie "The Postman" w/ Kevin Costner i seemed to remember that the postman played an important part in this story of holding things together. Time to read this one again.
