I bought the Dreamland CD as as I was blown away with Madeleine’s Bare Bones CD, a masterpiece of song writing, musical arrangement and production. I realise that Dreamland was an early work and Madeleine was finding her genre with styles including Chicago blues , delta blues, ‘modernish’ jazz, swing, pop and 20’s Charleston. There are some fairly dreadful arrangements, and some dire inappropriate solos namely Track 1, the sax man should be shot. Tracks 1 and 3 feature a bass marimba which was not a wise move. The musicality improves with the later tracks and 8,9 and 11 are listenable but not exciting. Track 7 is a hint of things to come with a morbidity that characterises Madeleine’s current work. Only Track 10, Dreamland, has a presence and arrangement of some distinction. I am grateful that Larry Klein emerged for her later works, devised some sympathetic arrangements and calmed the muso’s down.Read full review
We've been looking for Madeleine Peyroux's first album. Here you have the opportunity to find what you are looking for. Brand new and at a competitive price . . . great! Well pleased!
Although somewhat eclipsed by 'Careless Love' this is a great debut album, with plenty of variation of mood, and some great backings as well as vocals. Less of the Billy_Holiday_ish sound obvious in later recordings, but none the worse for that (there can only be one Lady Day, ever!).
Beautiful singer, chilling out; easy listening CD; love it!. Madeline Peyroux has a simply stunning voice
My first time with Miss Peyroux - love jazzy ladies but I didn't expect this old style. She is very very good. A modern Fitzgerald/Simone but so good. Glad I found her - you should too
