Been meaning to buy this DVD for years and very glad I did. Love the film, the story line and the acting, especially Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt. My family also enjoyed this film and have watched it several times. A very good buy and much recommended.
This film could so easily have gone a different route, playing on the "Romantic Comedy" tag and employing too many one-line death gaggs. Apart from the "Death and Taxes" reference it avoids this entirely, and is by far the better for it. Yes Brad Pitt is less than animated, moving about in a solemn manner. But I think he was trying to convey his character's unused-ness in occupying human form. Brad is no genius as an actor, but has shown previously that he has the range and physicality to transform himself into roles. His performance in "Twelve Monkeys" for example is quite statling and shows he has the depth to do more than play eye-candy. I found his portrayal of Death hypnotic. He played Death as an innocent, a creature of almost childlike simplicity and genuine curiosity. For the menace and darkness of his character you have to look deeper, but you will find it in his silences and in his self assured restfulnes. The scenes with the elderly Carribean woman are truly beatiful and extremely well played. Even Pitt's attempt at a Jamaican accent is surprisingly good, a risk that could have so easily proved corny and condescending. Anthony Hopkins, sadly, is less inclined to take risks, and I feel he is in danger of lapsing into giving us the same performance over and over. I confess that when I saw this film for the first time (at the cinema) I thought it too long. Now I have watched it a few times on DVD I feel the pace is perfect, giving us time to think, time to get to know the themes and characters. Hopkins asside, all the central characters are well played and I feel most of us will recognise ourselves and our families in there somewhere. The rivalries and jealousy, the quiet love and loyalty. Beautifully shot, with breathtakingly oppulent interiors, the film is a visual treat. The love scene is exceptional, in that it actually shows very little flesh.... focusing on the spiritual and emotional aspect of love (and sex) experienced for the first time. Buy it, watch it, cry like a baby, then do it all again....Read full review
Meet Joe Black is a romantic drama best suited to the female viewer and the Gay viewer for the eye candy that is Brad Pitt. Brad is utterly divine to look at in this movie, probably at his peak of physical perfection. The copy of this DVD, was perfect to watch and I did secure it for a bargin price,I bought it because a friend of mine said it was fantastic and her favourite movie ever. Sadly for my personal taste I found it somewhat weak and very predictable. Anthony Hopkins, undoutedly a fine actor, but his style is so very rigid and shows no variation. Pitt takes more chances in this movie, but this will never earn him an oscar. The plot we know is a fairytale but even so I did struggle to find any aspect of believability in this movie. Is it worth watching the answer is yes, at home on the TV. I however would have been dissapointed if I had made the travel to the cinema to see this movie.Read full review

I bought this film because I saw it on TV a while back, and really enjoyed it. I like the really hauntingly, gorgeous music, the storyline between the daughter and Joe Black. Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins are excellent. The learning curve that Joe goes through in "life". What I dislike is not being able to buy the soundtrack easily. Love it.
