Minder The 2009 Series
This is my second attempt to review this particular series as I realised after my first attempt that I was unfairly comparing it to the original - A mistake I fear I'm not alone in making. The unfortunate mistake made in this production lies not in it's quality or indeed the calibre of the cast - both are beyond brilliant there is no doubt about it. However in naming the series Minder, the average viewer (including myself) tends to automatically try their hardest to draw comparisons to the original series. Film-making has come a very long way since the inception of the original series and having viewed all 6 episodes twice now in as objective a manner as I possibly can, I'm also now convinced that the quality of British Comedy has likewise made extraordinary strides and what's more FOR ... This is my second attempt to review this particular series as I realised after my first attempt that I was unfairly comparing it to the original - A mistake I fear I'm not alone in making. The unfortunate mistake made in this production lies not in it's quality or indeed the calibre of the cast - both are beyond brilliant there is no doubt about it. However in naming the series Minder, the average viewer (including myself) tends to automatically try their hardest to draw comparisons to the original series. Film-making has come a very long way since the inception of the original series and having viewed all 6 episodes twice now in as objective a manner as I possibly can, I'm also now convinced that the quality of British Comedy has likewise made extraordinary strides and what's more FOR THE BETTER in this intervening period; for this is indeed a Masterpiece. The 2009 Minder has all the elements to normally guarantee success both in the UK and Australia - it is just such a pity the producers and the folk at Talkback Thames never saw fit to grant this masterful work a new and unique title as surely it deserves one (in fact I wouldn't be surprised to see a re-branded sequel in let's hope the not too distant future). Shane Richie (the effervescent and lovable villain of the series) teams with Lex Shrapnel (the minder) in what can only be described as a tribute to the casting agents; as from the very first scenes of the opening episode a rapport is firmly established between both main characters and more importantly the viewing audience. The entire series displays a fast paced comedy as only the most skilled script writers and actors can deliver & I challenge anyone who views it to do so with a straight face (this offer not open to US citizens). Yes Minder 2009 is different to the original but I am pleased to say FOR THE BETTER; the image and sound quality reflect 21st century technologies and what's more the comedy is quicker, more profound and far less predictable than that of the original series (& let's face it - the original Minder set a very high standard indeed!). The entire series is filmed in and around London displaying picture postcard scenes of the iconic landmarks I grew to love whilst visiting this majestic city, in fact an interesting fusion of both old and new London scenes tends to give rise to a compulsion to revisit and I'm sure would have a similar effect on folk who had never set foot on UK soil - so once again the filmmakers have (perhaps unwittingly) triumphed yet again. In Summary:- EASILY the BEST Series I have seen emerge from the UK in many years, unbelievably funny, incredibly well cast, some of the best cinematography I've seen in any Television series, well worth the modest cost & WORTHY of at least a SECOND series - (True devotees of the original Minder will recall the fact that for the first couple of years it failed to make any noticeable impression on the ratings???? ) Give it a chance - you WILL NOT be disappointed - However don't make my initial mistake and attempt to compare it to the original series, this is a show that stands alone as an excellent work and deserves to be taken on it's OWN MERIT.

A programe by any other name
I found this programe to be totally under rated,Shane Richie Plays the nephew of The Great Arther Daly from the original Minder,and there in my belief lies the problem.You just can't remake a clasic TV programe as everyone will always say it's not as good as the original. This however is a great follow on,the story lines are just as unbeliveable and funny.The relationship between Archie Daly (Shane Richie)and his new Minder Jamie Cartwright played by Lex Sharp is also brought up to date with Archie showing a sympathetic side to their new friendship. It is in my humble opnion a must see future classic once the comparison stigma has gone.If this had been just another TV programe in the making under another name without the connection,it would be a Classic in its own right.I found this programe to be totally under rated,Shane Richie Plays the nephew of The Great Arther Daly from the original Minder,and there in my belief lies the problem.You just can't remake a clasic TV programe as everyone will always say it's not as good as the original.
