A classic "Feel Good" movie starring Maureen O'Hara (How Green Was My Valley, McClintock, Mrs Minever etc.) A young Natalie Wood (West Side Story, The Searchers and Rebel Without a Cause) alongside John Payne (The Restless Gun, The Razor's Edge) and Edmund Gwenn (Them!) The story of a pragmatic single-mother who is focussed on her career and bringing up her daughter. Her world is turned upside down when the man hired to be Santa in the Macy's parade falls drunk and a white haired and bearded man is forced to take the drunk's place. He is so good she hires him to be Macy's Santa and he claims his name is Kris Kringle. This is the original version and it shows, it is more subtle, sharper observed than either the 1970's TV movie or the 1994 re-make. There is some doubt as to whether Kringle is Santa or a nice deluded old man, only in the final scene is all revealed. In both the remakes it firmly lets you know immediately who Kringle really is. Warning: Do not buy the colourized version. Colourized versions are abominations and should be destroyed. This also applies to the colourized versions of It's a Wonderful Life, Casablanca and Scrooge. B&W films are lit differently and the colourization is pale and pastel that flattens out the picture.Read full review

A simple plot but with great characters and real meaning. It embodies the true meaning of Christmas.

I enjoyed this original black and white film far more than the remake. I thought it was a much better telling of this story.
