This is a splendid performance of one of the most beautiful works ever composed, the 'Vespers of the Blessed Virgin' by the early Baroque master Claudio Monteverdi. It is a live recording of a concert given in the San Lorenzo Cathedral in Lugano, Switzerland in 1999. The acoustics suit the music well, as is the case with many of the great European cathedrals. The camera alternates between the conductor, vocal soloists, choir and instrumentalists, all of whom take part with evident commitment. The accompanying booklet contains a discussion of this work and of the choir, orchestra and conductor in English, German, French and Italian. Very helpfully, the booklet also gives the entire sung text in both the Latin original and an English translation. It has to be pointed out that the English rendering of the famous Medieval hymn Ave maris stella ('Hail, star of the sea') contained in this work differs substantially from the Latin original; however, that is not enough to detract from the immense enjoyment this DVD provides. Watching and listening to this is in fact a life-enhancing experience, so that all involved in making it available deserve our gratitude.Read full review
