I went to Screwfix/B&Q just to see how the 2016 'like-for-like' model is made nowadays. Firstly, the new model has only one adjustment lever, which is made of the same metal and clicks on to the body in the same way - not as strong as the old model which has seperate adjusters for the front wheels. New model puts all of the weight on one adjuster, which is fine just for the rear wheels but not strong enough for all four. The new model has a weaker, smaller B&S 300 series125cc engine, which just doesn't put out the same power. Unless you're only ever cutting the top 1/3 off perfect grass, it's not quite up to the job compared to the old B&S Sprint engine with 4hp. The newer model still use plastic wheel bushes, which means the wheels still have a small amount of play in them from new (unlike more expensive mowers with metal wheel bearings - so no difference there. So, in a nutshell, £100-£120 gets you a better used mower for less than half the price! Save yourself a few quid, and spend it on some garden furniture or plants instead.Read full review

We moved from a conventional garden which our electric mower managed easily, and moved to a larger undulating garden that took ages with the old mower until it blew up! We bought a cheap electric mower but that died in the first year as well. We have been looking for a good petrol mower for most of the summer, and have been really pleased with this Mountfield, which makes cutting the grass effortless. We have started it a couple of times during the cold weather, just to make sure its running and it starts first time every time. Looking forward to cutting the grass this uear, and having nice lines in the lawn, chickens permitting!
I have had 3 Mountfield lawnmowers. All have given good service, the body of them has given up before the engine. Spares are seldom required but when needed, eBay or B&Q have a good selection, at a price. Mountfield SP 470 is a petrol driven engine which powers the back wheels when you squeeze a leaver on the handle bar, at the same time you have to hold another leaver to keep the engine running. You do get a bit tired of holding the leavers. Starting them doesn’t appear to be a problem, the pull cord start works well. Fuel is used with economy. This model is ideal for the small lawn. Mountfield HP 470 is the model you have to push along, so more exercise to keep you fit. The weight can be a problem if you have to carry it, electric mowers are usually lighter, but need a power supply. I give the Mountfield SP 470 a 5 star rating as other makes are no better.Read full review
well, Yes, a very good product, it even cuts grass!! It really is absoloutly excellant, in every way, quite light to handle, starts with very little effort, just ideal!
We got this mower as we have big garden, it is everything & more than what we expected. My partner had to mow lawns as was to difficult for me but now I do it with such ease as it also had a pulling start which I can manage without straining. If this one for what ever reason breaks down we will buy another one the same
