I loved this gentle storyline when it was on tv many years ago, and never missed an episode. Albert Finney and a Sue Johnston gave a masterclass in capturing the feel of the period described in the books. Actors of Albert's calibre are few and far between nowadays. His portrayal of the rascally Uncle Silas is a pleasure to behold. The whole series captures the gentle rustic existence of life at the turn of the last century with a subtle humour: the long, hot summer holidays of young nephew Ned and the escapades of his Uncle Silas. A pleasure to watch, nothing in it to offend the senses, just brilliant writing and acting. Delighted to be able to buy it on dvd at last.
