Set of 6 NAREX 8116 Cabinetmakers Chisels

(Black Hornbeam Handles)

Accurately ground, affordable, metric, Cabinetmaker’s chisels with fine edges. The shoudered teardrop handles are made from hornbeam so they will withstand taps from a mallet without the surface becoming marred and uncomfortable to use when paring.

Narex chisels are accurately ground, consistently hardened and offer exceptional value for money. They use a very efficient manufacturing process that produces good chisels cheaply, which is a very different thing from making cheap chisels.

Most chisels in this price range are induction hardened, which is popular with the accountants but not very precise (some hard, some soft and some just right) so most manufacturers err on the side of caution and make them all a bit soft. This is why many people believe old steel is better - the steel itself isn't the problem, it's the heat treatment!

Narex come from the Czech Republic so they were tucked away behind the iron curtain while the induction hardening fad was going on. Instead they use a specially developed chrome manganese steel that can be isothermally hardened. We use the same method in the west to make small high perfomance springs that need to be very accurately and evenly hardened.

It's expensive to set up in the first place but requires fewer steps than conventional hardening, so once up and running you can make huge quantities of superb chisels very cheaply. Sharpening angles and edge taking are the same as good quality conventional carbon steel. Strength,edge holding and uniformity of hardening are if anything marginally better.
