Still one of the easiest and cheapest cameras to use with a microscope. I have three of these I use. James

The Nikon coolpix 990 is a brilliant camera! and THE camera for close up work. the lens is high quality and makes good use of 3.2 MP available. All pictures taken with this camera are highly detailed, you would think it needs more megapixels, but this is not so, the lens is the most important thing in any camera!
Old it may be but what a great camera, and picked up easily for around 40-60 pounds other newer cameras offer more pixels but no where near the facilities this camera is underrated on the second-hand market buy one before the prices start to rise
The swivel bodied coolpix series,a unique split body design that allows shots to be taken from just about any angle, from a design standpoint an absolute classic, hard to believe its over a decade since its release and a shame that Nikon didn't pursue its development beyond the coolpix 4500. Any way. a quick list of pros and cons PROS. 1. Swivel body design, takes shots from any angle. 2. Great build quality, solid magnesium alloy body, feels 'good in the hand' 3. unlike other compact designs lens does not telescope out from body when switched on, ideal for digiscoping or attatching to other optical instruments. 4. Full manual control over aperture, shutter speeds and a whole range of user adjustable parameters. 5. Range of high quality lens extenders available from fisheye to telephoto. 6. Classic design stil looks great even in 2010. 7. Extrodinary macro performance. 8. Can be obtained cheaply. 9 Runs off AA batteries. CONS 1. A lot of functions are menu driven and not that easy to access, 2. Images are noisy by current standards even at base ISO. 3 3 megapixels may not be enough (depends on your post processing abilities) 4 Poor battery door design (repair kits available on e-bay) 5. 10 year old camera, CCD will probably have developed a few dead or stuck pixels and possibly other faults. On balance I really like the 990,its not the easiest camera in the world to use but offers a lot of user control and some unique ergonomics that allow for a different photographic approach. As a product it is a reflection of a time when camera companies were leveraging resources into unique products that unlike today are not totally market driven.Read full review
I have owned a Nikon Coolpix 990 since they were first introduced in 2000. At the time it cost me nearly a £1000.00 as cameras with 3.1 megapixels were absolutely state-of-the-art and Nikon Cameras are just the best. I have had no real reason to want to change it. I can still print fantastic quality prints to A3 size. So, why buy one from ebay. Well, 990's can be prone to the little plastic tabs in the battery compartment breaking; and after seven years that's exactly what happened. I simply couldn't justify buying a TTL so decided on another 990. They are without doubt about as close as you can get to a TTL style full-size camera, but more compact. The swivel body makes carrying easy and with the array of extras and lenses that can still be found for this camera (wide angle, telephoto and fisheye) it really is very versatile, enabling professional quality pictures to be taken without the bulk of a full sized camera bag and lenses. I use a 1Gb Compact Flash card which gives me the capacity to take over a thousand pictures at print-quality. The one I purchased from ebay had more accessories than I have ever seen with a used 990 so I just had to have it! It was an absolute bargain and the sellers (a hospice charity) are lovely people and very accommodating as I collected it in person. There are hundreds of cameras out there with more pixels (even my phone has more!) but, in my opinion, few of them have the lens quality or the technology in their smaller bodies to be able to compete with this Nikon if you want to print stunning pictures without the associated size and costs of a full size TTL digital camera.Read full review
