I have only been using it for a few days but replaced another old kindle with this even older kindle because of large screen and good reviews. At first I thought it was not working but I live in a cellphone dead spot and had to take it with me in the car to get cellular connectivity. ( I did not realize that it didn’t connect to WiFi without cell towers). Anyway, it works! It came in a great case, and I added a book light. Easy to read not as bulky and heavy as I feared. Battery life is much better since it has WiFi off anyway, so it’s just as well.

This is a great reader that Amazon no longer sells. It is running Linux underneath, so it can be unlocked to be a general-purpose computer, except that the battery lasts a month! Good: • the eInk is very easy on battery power, unlike lighted displays. • the eInk display is also much easier on the eyes than lighted displays. • the large display is easier on older eyes — and PDF files — than other readers. • FREE 3G! So you can use this on the Internet virtually anywhere (see below). • the physical keyboard, while nothing to write home about compared to REAL keyboards, is much easier to use than an on-screen virtual keyboard. Bad: • no touch screen; all manipulation is via joystick and buttons. This is the main reason I docked it a star. • the included "experimental" web browser no longer works, due to security updates. You must go to user support sites to download a working browser. Dock'd one star. • no lighting, which is handy for low-light situations.Read full review

I've bought this e-reader only for its big screen (9.7") because I often need to view pdf and scans at full screen: it's impossible to have a good vision zooming only a part of the file. Obviously common e-book vision (mobi, prc, ...) is great, because of the very large screen. Also I've choosen this item, instead of a common tablet, for it's very low reflection on the screen. It's a bit expensive, but it's the only one of its category in commerce. I have some problems with wi-fi connection outside U.S. because it connects only via 3G. I spent additional money for customs tax: shipping U.S. - Italy it's not free. I would buy it again, but not from U.S.!
The nicest thing about this is the large size for reading documents. When you turn the device sideways it changes the format for reading right side up and even resizes the letters for even larger apearance when reading sideways. Great for reading large pdf documents with ease. the smaller kindle has a better keyboard and works quiker with conecting online. I like to use the kindle dx and the kindle type together. the kindle type is better for playing games, Although the card games work better on the dx because of the size.
I own a modern e-reader that was made years after the DX came out (Kobo Aura H2O, to be specific). It has Carta and a bunch of other features the Kindle DX never dreamed of having. BUT this device is still awesome. And the screen size makes up for it. Even with the lower resolution and Pearl technology. I love the big screen even if my eyes are just fine. It just makes everything easier. PDFs can be a pain to read depending on what types you have. I find that the PDFs with text and built-in photos on them (sorry, don't know how to explain it better) work very well. However, scanned PDFs of books from sites like OpenLibrary do not load. There's problems with it. But otherwise it still makes PDF reading great! Screen refreshes every page turn are unavoidable because it's an older device. I thought it would bug me because my other e-reader refreshes every sixth turn. But because there's so much screen space, I take longer to read a page and when I flip it I don't mind it much at all. Also, you can't have custom text unless you hack it and there's only 8 text sizes available. You also can't remove the progress bar and header which is annoying but I found myself getting used to it. It only takes Amazon book formats (.azw, .mobi that is DRM-free), but if you use Calibre to convert ePubs and whatnot they format just fine. I have not tried this device with DRM-locked books so I can't say how they work with library books. Sorry! The keyboard makes note taking and searching great. I love the physical page turn buttons and the other ones too. I think they should've made it left hand friendly though, even if I'm right handed. It would've been more inclusive. The text-to-speech isn't something I use, but I find the voices less-robotic than normal. Free 3G is awesome, I love it. It would be helpful if I was ever in a pinch and needed to send e-mail. PS: It still works in 2017. Who knows when it will die. My only issue with this device is some of PDFs are not supported, like I mentioned earlier, and the text on my device is already fading. Also, the case it came with nearly broke the bezel in half. I would not recommend using the Amazon cover for this. Buy a sleeve or something instead. It's robust and doesn't scratch easily. I made this review because I just love the device that much. Hope it helps you in 2017- if people are still buying it!Read full review

I bought th DX because I wanted to read a book with more than 10 sentences & 5 words per line, but still use Amazon Books (love Amazon). I though not having a touch-screen would bother me, but the bottons are quite intuitive (even if the keyboard is a bit small. My only wish is that it weighed less, it is a little heavy at around 1.2 lbs for thos long reading sessions (I just take breaks a little earlier, not a bd thing). Overall I love the DX !!!

Just like the iPad's screen size transformed the way I use iOS, this large format Kindle transformed my feelings about eBooks. I had gotten used to the 6" screens and thought they were great, but the ease of reading on this larger size is just something else; it's reading on a whole 'nother level! The only downsides I can see to this device is that it's a bit heavier, and the battery life isn't as good as the smaller devices when the 3G is on. There is no WiFi - just the 3G cellular.

1. The battery was so old that it became bloated out of shape and nearly ruined the screen. 2. It was well-nigh impossible to register the DX under my name at Amazon. Specialized help was needed. 3. Software was outdated. All three issues had to be solved for extra USD 70 investment.

Love my new kindle! Received in perfect condition with no sign of previous use and new leather cover to boot! It has met all my expectations and I am thrilled to have another kindle dx for my everyday reading. All I had to do was transfer my books from my first kindle dx (I had an original for 10 years) this newer one.

large screen big plus for programmers but: in pdf you cannot highlight text big minus, when you convert pdf to mobi or kindle format you loose pictures and code, so it's better for programmers but still not good enough as my expectations were.
