Because ; 8 port is really two 4 port chips inside daisy chained thru the uplink. Consequently the "second half" (4 ports) are going thru the first 4 port chip. The power supply provided is suitable for 4 ports and it would be better to buy two 4 port units each with own p/s. (daisy chain them yourself if you want) Only possible downside (depending on your use requirements) is that the power into the unit also goes back to the usb3 bus. This means that, if you had a small device (like a raspberry pi) that you wanted to issue a power off command to..... And you had one of these units with its own p/s on.... Then your pi/whatever would NOT shutdown. But, for laptops, desktops etc. It's fine. Lastly, the switches don't completely shut off residual current from the LED's so, you. MAY have LED's lit even though current isn't flowing to the plugged in disk/stick /whatever. It depends on the design of your host usb3 bus. The IC's inside are identical to those in some big name brands costing 6 - 7 times the price. But, unless you go for a specific design usb powered hub - you wont find any difference in items costing under £80.Read full review

mine worked for a short time before it stopped reading the usb devices intermitantly , when powered or unpowered. if you fles where the cable plugs into the hub you can get the devices to work, it is not the lead but more like the soldered pins inside the hub unit making the hub useless to use. i have to twist the cable a bit and tuck it under something to keep it from moving. it is not the lead as i have tried a few different leads with the same result

I needed a hub at the end of a USB extension lead that would allow me to mirror 2 usb sticks using WIndows Briefcase. I tried a passive one, but it was unstable. This one being powered, does the job fine. Some reviewers say that it does not fully support USB3 power specs re downstream current, but it's not a problem for me whether it does or not. It does the job I bought it for. This would only really be a consideration if you wanted to charge multiple items from it where the total current requirement is greater than the power supply output. So all in all, a good value piece of kit and it looks quite cool too - power lead could be a bit longer, but at this price it's no big deal.

I got this because it is a powered hub so it takes pressure off the power supply unit in your PC if the PC is a small form factor one or an all-in-one. If you notice problems copying files from another drive and the copied files have weird characters in the file names then a powered hub might solve the problem. If your USB 3 drive does not work or causes instability then try one of these. A small downside is when you Safely Remove Hardware and everything gets removed. Go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel and remove from there instead. Sometimes the USD sockets can be a bit tight to plug into.

I can plug 3 of my 4 xbox controllers into it but it doesn't seem to have enough power for the 4th one, or maybe there is another reason unrelated to this product for the 4th one continually disconnecting. I have an unpowered 4 usb socket that will handle the 4th controller so it is not a problem for me personally. Still a good product though in my opinion. I like the individual switches and lights for each port.
