I visited Lyme Park this Summer but didn't purchase a Guide due to cost really. We had paid a substantial fee to visit. This Guide is from 1998 but had all the essential information that would not change for a place of this age and history. I really enjoyed looking through and being refreshed on many of the facts we picked up on our visit. Lyme Park is very significant in that it was used for some of the most famous outdoor scenes in 'Pride and Prejudice' (1996) with Colin Firth. I always understood that Chatsworth House in Derbyshire was the filming venue for those scenes and only learned of this additional venue that weekend. Lyme Park was a much loved home to an aristocratic family who were bitterly opposed to leaving but had to for a number of financial reasons I believe. I think if they came back, there is still a lot they could do to bring it back to an even nicer place to visit. I think the Guide could be made more interesting if it potrayed a softer side to Lyme Park. It was full of cold, clear facts but never mentioned the famous TV programme that finally really puts it on the map or the pain that the family went through in having to virtually abandon the property for the National Trust to take over.Read full review
