I've used my trusty old Shure P58 since the 70's and thought it was just the best, then recently did a show with the Beta 87A. I have always considered the microphone to be an instrument that I play with my voice, and a whole new world has just opened up before me! This mic has made the changes that age brings to a singer's voice a fun new challenge. I do wish that it had an on/off switch. Note that your volume knob may need to be lowered to avoid feedback.

This mic has great sound, bright and clear, comparable to my favorite studio condenser. I bought it for onstage vocals but I have a feeling it’s going to get a lot of use in my recording arsenal as well. Also very lightweight, and it looks good too! This is a huge step up from my SM58, and since I don’t tend to abuse my microphones I’m hoping it won’t matter that it’s probably a little less indestructible.

The Shure Beta 87A mic has very even response and works well for my baritone range voice. I used it in a big band setting last night and it cut through the band well. I also use the mic in a smaller variety band and it seems to "play well" with a fairly wide range of other vocal and instrumental mics. It does not matter in my particular application, due to the fact that I have it on a stand, but this is a feather weight microphone. An important FYI on this mic is that you will need phantom power to make this mic work. The 48 v power built into my little 4 channel Mackie mixer worked quite well. Check your sound board to be sure it has this feature or be prepared to find some other way to meet this need.

Very nice top end. Captures subtle details while having that presence that cuts through a mix. Big improvement over the SM58, which is especially important if you're recording live stuff and can't use a big honkin valve mic due to logistics, this will give pretty decent results without the feedback. Also is quite durable and a pretty good bang for the buck.
