This collates some 'spare' material of the late and much-lamented Nick Drake. There are surely some things here that the artist would have shuddered to find issued, and a couple of 'Magic' moments too. Where Drake could occasionally edge toward twee, he had the sensibility normally, to steer away. Some might wince at the lilting title track, for instance, from the opening lyric - but this turns sour in sentiment from a jaundiced spirit, as if tiring of all humanity. 'Joey' is sublime, and 'Rider On The Wheel' is solid evidence that there was material he recorded in his room, that is about as good as that done in a studio. The versions of previously released songs here are interesting too, and make sure the quality is high enough across this release, to be more than just for completists - while keeping them happy at the same time by not putting on verbatim repeats of the originals. Some might listen for pointers from a tortured dismayed soul, that indicate for his unfortunate death. That's morbid thinking, and many an artist might hint at such in their lyrics - had they died of an overdose soon afterward. Still, there are many redeeming moments for the fan or casual buyer, and this album certainly doesn't detract from the talented lads' legend. Though nowhere near cohesive or essential, it does offer a few more gems from a sadly limited-by-fate catalogue. Also worth noting, is that Drake's music has never actually suffered from age, and it's been said before that he was indeed, timeless. Incidentally, it has been suggested that Nick Drake was losing his capability to play and sing at the same time due to a deteriorating psyche. Hearing 'Pink Moon' suggests the contrary - that he was very capable, but simply and wisely opted to record instrument and voice separately, so as to enunciate each to the best result. This was achieved, and it makes that a more professionally accomplished album. If you are discovering Drake though, don't hold back and deprive yourself to be selective - all three original albums are highly and wholly recommended.Read full review
Excellent album from Mr Drake including a very rare track Tow The Line. Lovely reworkings of tracks from previous albums. Certainly a must have if you are a Drake fan.
recomended by a friend. it is very acostic, and nick drake has a pleasant singing voice. his lyrics are dreamy but it wasnt my cup of tea unfortunatly.
