I wanted a small AF Nikon zoom in the 70-200 range for a small shoulder bag. After doing a bit of research this model caught my eye. My small budget narrowed the field, but I still wanted quality, and this model seemed to fit the bill. The D model has the faster AF speed and better 3D matrix metering, so this is what I purchased. Initial testing shows crisp images on a Nikon D7000 camera body, and the focusing is indeed quick. Just remember to match your minimum hand held shutter speed with the selected focal length, and you’re good to go. Very sturdy, compact, and sharp at less than $100.

This lens is nicely compact and light, and it has a descent zoom range. But i can't recommend it because of a major flaw: inconsistent autofocus. On a high-end body, you can adjust AF Fine Tune for sharp focus at one focal length, but the same setting will not result in sharp images at other focal lengths.

35-70, 2X, F3.5. Not much zoom, not very fast by current standards. No AF, limited AE without adding chip. @ normal exposures -F8,F5.6, F11 - as sharp as any current zoom. Use A - bracket exposures, learn to focus, save $1K, get better fotos.

Lens testing shows this one performs better than the AF-s cheapo standard 18-55mm plastic squirrelly kit lens. Works on modern DX Nikon bodies with AF motors built-in. Weight is more... feels very solid and nicely balanced with D300.

The good - it's small and unobtrusive. mechanically and optically really really REALLY well made. If Nikon made this lens today, they'd be charging out the... for it. Mine's twenty years old. I expect it to last well into my retirement. It's sharp 2200 lpi on an MTF. This was good enough for 12 megapixel and below Nikons. The con - It's can't compete for instance with a sharp Nikkor or Zeiss prime with MTF's above 3000 lpi. Also I dinged it one star bcz of the linear distortion, especially at the wide end. Just make sure to shoot RAW so you can autocorrect the disto when in LR or PSD. that's the technical part. Artistically, if you are a street photog, this lens will allow you into places you wouldn't dream of taking a $1200 24-70 F2.8 zoom. Yes, those lenses are higher res but for shooting people on the street you are busted as being a pro. This lens is your passport into those lesser street spaces. Me, I am a Nashville musician and I carry it with me on all the stages I play on. For what I use it for, it really works well. Read full review
