I had intended getting a 300 f2.8 for wildlife but was very glad I got the 200 f2 instead. The quality is about as good as it gets with high contrast and superb sharpness all round, especially with the ideal D800E as a perfect partner. Note..at f2 with a 1.4x Converter you have a 280 f2.8 Lens which as far as I can tell through my own Field Tests are pretty close if not the same results. Now you have both Lenses in one. I have used older 300 f2.8 (twaiters) from Nikon as well as Sigma and this combo really beats the lot.. I would point out that it is enormous and very weighty so it might be somewhat difficult to hand hold for some of you however I find this a boon in short sessions as it helps me hold my D800E a lot steadier than lighter set ups. I always have a sturdy Monopod to hand should I need it anyway. There is no Filter fitting on the front Element as it has a protective curved Glass front. there is also a 52mm rear Filter holder with clear Glass as part of the set up which can be used for other Filters but I don't use them or see much point in using them today with so much after shoot manipulation through good Apps such as Photoshop or Aperture. I would however queston the use of Polarizers ? I did think this Lens was a specialist one without much practicality until I actually purchased it and I am so pleased I did with no regrets whatsoever. A true Nikon work of Superiority with the finest of detail captured through the D800E unfiltered Sensor that is on a par with Leica S series which I have also used.. Nikon being at a more realistic price.Read full review
My reason for buying this lens was that I was stretching the capabilities of the 70-200mm f2.8. Low light concerts, sport. And it is relatively brighter than the 300mm. I still use the 70-200mm when I need that flexibility to fill the frame but, at the right distance, this one wins hands down. Though uncommon, reportedly many people's favourite. Mine too. A dream companion to the 400mm or 600mm.
