This is a better adaptation North and South than the later adaptation and it has on the whole remained faithful to the original. It also reveals how well Mrs Gaskell tackled the theme of the contrast between the burgeoning northern industrial scene and the more, sedate agrarian and aristocratic south, but also the fashionable. london. This is well cast although Mr.Thornton is rather too sultry but Robin Bailey as Mr Hale and Rosalie Crutchley as Mrs. Thornton, the mother are beautiful performances. The scenes in Mr. Higgin's house and his daughters are very compelling. This production reveals how well and comprehensively the theme was treated, and the author Mrs Gaskell is well over due to be considered oe of the great tradition, a successor to Austen, and an anticipator of George Eliot .I recommend this DVD as an introduction to a great novel and an essential introduction to the early industrial society of Victorian England She has one line Jane Austen could not have written which reveals the rapidity of change in the years intervening between Jane Austen's death and this novel,a mere 37 years. Good value and came on time packed well. I am disappointed though because it is an awful version. The newest version is so so good I suppose it would never come near to this one. If you like the newer version then don't bother with this one!!
