The Olympus E-1 is built like a tank. It was meant for extreme weather conditions and was a professional camera. Great optics and the 4/3rd's system lenses still work including the newest SWD lenses. I have used the E-1 for the last three years without a problem, mainly for web design and small print format work. The 5.5 megapixel sensor and software has fidelity to the subject matter. The only downfall is pushing the sensor to ultra ISO speeds- 1600+.
The E-1 continues to provide excellent images along with an almost indestructible build quality and waterproofing. Now professional quality Olympus 4/3rds lenses are more affordable, this camera is a really good investment.

The Olympus E-1 is a legendary camera, having had rave reviews since its 'birth.' This is my first E-1 (I already have and have had other Olympus E-series cameras) and I got it at a low price because some (3) of the CF Pins in the card slot were damaged -- well in fact the damage means cards cannot be read! BUT, and this is a BIG BUT, it works excellently tethered to my PC with the Olympus Studio Software. Of course, loading pictures to the PC is slower than to a card, but in a 'studio' situation this is a small consideration, especially for still life or macro shots. So all-in-all, I got myself a bargain! Thanks, Wisz!
In part I can only echo what others have said in earlier reviews regarding build and image quality of this DSLR. The build is excellent, solid and well finished with the majority of buttons being exactly where you would want them. It all seems to me to be very intuative. Shutter actuations are quiet with a lovely "engineered" sound to them. The real issue though is of course image quality. I have to say the images I have produced so far have been (leaving my shortcomings as a photographer aside) superb. Colour rendition is up there with the very best and the level of detail captured with a good lens in adequate lighting conditions is terrific. On paper this camera is limited by its low pixel count, in reality this is simply not an issue. I came to this camera from an E520, in itself a very nice bit of kit. I would be surprised if I went back to using the E520 as my main camera body. The battery grip simply enhances the use of the camera, balancing it very well and enabling you to shoot for very long periods. Overall the E1 is an absolute stunner.Read full review
Bought another E-1 as I actually missed the one I sold a few years ago. This is the finest camera ergonomically, bar none and 5Mpixels is more than enough for great A3 prints. Coupled with the 12-16mm and an FL-36 flashgun is all you need for great pics. Once you use one of these, you will ignore the 5Mp, the small rear screen and no stabiliser. The E-1 is the Leica M of the dSLR world, quiet, solid and beautifully made - and the lenses are top notch. Likewise, my old Olympus C-5050 is also a 5Mp classic. The E-1, a great camera with life in it yet and a 150,000 shot shutter life. Oh yes, and it takes the same battery as my E-30 and my son's E-510. Now why on Earth did Olympus just not uprate the E-1 with a higher resolution sensor, stabiliser and bigger rear screen as opposed to the E-3 which is big, ugly and clunky????Read full review
