Lion Rampant is a great set of rules for historical wargaming at a large-skirmish size. You’d be looking at 30-40 models per army. Lion Rampant isn’t linked to a specific figures company or even scale, and the unit descriptions are kept vague (so men-at-arms are the elite fighters, be they knights or roman centurions). That way they cover a wide range of periods, and you can game with whatever models you like, be they Perry Hundred Years War, Games Workshop Empire, Fireforge Teutonic Knights... The rules are quick to learn, and have an activation system that means play swaps from one player to another very often, so there’s very little sitting around watching your opponent move masses of models. As the game is designed for quick play, some players may find it lacking in depth, but for those who want to play a wargame with less than 100 models in under two hours (though you COULD play with 100 models if you like), this is perfect. Plus it’s only about a tenner, so what’s stopping you!?Read full review
