This album has talent by the bucket-load. Just look at the artists involved - it's a veritable folk who's who. What's more, it's not just talent on paper; there is not a single track that doesn't work. From the slow June Tabor numbers through to the rousing singing with everyone joining in on 'New Jerusalem' and the bluegrass style 'Ship's carpenter', they all grab your attention. Jim Moray gives a great performance of Cuckoos nest (one of the rudest folk songs to be recorded), and Show of Hands give a urgency to Country Life which isn't on the album version. Listening to this album is like being at a very exclusive party at Oysterband's house, where all their famous friends got up and took a turn at the mike. I've played it to non-folk-listening friends and even they've admired the skill. Can't believe I didn't buy this when it first came out - stop deliberating now and get your copy!Read full review
The Oyster band, excellent folk band who evolved from punk , rock , folk and poltical activism to have some of the best of all of those sources, produce a record full of joy and energy. A folk record that the purists could tolerate, but full of the attack and energy of great rock (without the bombast and earplug requirements.) The concept - Oyster band invited some other musicians and singers they respect to play and record live in a large group, with minimal rehearsal, in front of a small invited audience. The goal - excitement and spontaneity as the players in the big session play great tunes that are unfamiliar. Delivered in full by The Handsome Family, Steve Knightley and Phil Beer of Show of hands, Eliza carthy,June Tabor, Jim Moray and of course the Oysterband themselves with John Jones peerless vocals - They've done it a few times since of course but this was the first experimentRead full review
