I first bought this when it was originally released (on vinyl). To me there are two ways of describing Peter Gabriel, either he didn't belong in Genesis because he was too talented or he was Genesis, hence their success. Drummer boy Collins had problems coping with Peter's ad lib antics, particularly on tour and frequently displayed his envy of Peter covertly. He (Peter) reminds me of Sydney Barrett (Pink Floyd) but unlike Syd instead of 'disappearing', he built his music empire here in the UK combining his musical genius with his very clever artistry and animation with video. The album 'So', exemplifies what a talented and creative artist and passionate lover of music Peter Gabriel is. It's an album that you never tire of listening to and one where it would be difficult to choose a favourite track. Despite it's age, the album remains timeless and anyone who has listened to any of his individual work or Genesis will not have wasted money investing in this.Read full review

'Sledgehammer' was a massive hit (number one in the USA), as was 'Don't Give Up', with Kate Bush's vocals adding extra pathos. 'This Is The Picture' clearly shows the slightly surreal influence of co-writer Laurie Anderson, and the whole is given flight by Daniel Lanois' impeccable production. The towering achievement, however, is 'Mercy Street', a sparely orchestrated and perfectly constructed tribute to the late poet Anne Sexton.
