This record is fabulous - you mightn't agree at 1st - but even if you haven't listened to all the other Portishead records this one really works. Listen to it once - it's a bit off Listen to it twice - ooh there's some really neat bits in there Listen to it three time - Wow this is fantastic This isn't the type of record you just stick on and let it run in the background - you need to listen to it to really appreciate the hard work that's gone into it. It is a master piece, and where others seem to achieve some success almost by accicent with one or two hit songs on a record - this one works the whole way through.. There isn't one bad track on there - they are all technically great & the vocals are as always superb. This Album was well worth waiting for.. Now as you probably gathered I'm a bit of a fan - but I maintain, even if you're not - if you are in any way shape or form appreciative of good well constructed music, you will like, possibly love, Portishead 3rd.. Once you've established that - go on get the others as well ;-) Enjoy - I know I am..Read full review
Its been a while since the last slice of portishead and i am really happy to say it has absolutely been worth the wait!Just dont expect to like it straight away, it took 3 listens to before the penny dropped with me. Stick with it though! the first song that grabbed me was track 4 -the rip, stunnig vocals and a really beautiful track. If you want something a little more upbeat track 8- machine gun combines a real dirty bass line with a really heavy beat, an absolute masterclass from them!people will tell you that its a weired album, but its just a portishead album, and everything that comes with that. Old fans will love it. All in all a really really top quality album, which may take a few listens to "get it", but you will....
Recently buying this album I did not expect to love it as much as I do. We all loved Dummy, the beautiful glory box and roads, and the brilliantly sleazy sour times, but if you are prepared to listen and try to be open minded this album will prove to be just as varied and exciting. So go on give it a go.
I am disappointed with theis album. It took Portishead years to create it and it's terible. I wouldn't have bought it if I listened to it before. The only enhjoyable record is record #11, Threads.
