I was lucky enough to see Pam Ayres live a few weeks ago, which is why I wanted one of her books. I wasn't disappointed she is very clever lady. The book is hilarious, with not only many excellent poems but also little extras explain how they came about, what inspired her to write them. and because I recently saw her I hear her voice as I read them.

I loved Pam Ayres in the day but really only enjoyed reading again her more famous poems. A lot of them not that interesting and are very long, got fed up before getting halfway through. The book is now on a charity shop shelf. That said, this is all personal preference and others may well give it 5*.

During the course of my first reading of The Works of Pam Ayres I was taking more notice of her delightful turns of phrases and the slanted, quirky outlook she has on life, than I was of a long-handled spoon sticking out of my coffee cup. As a consequence I had to buy a replacement volume off eBay for the now badly-coffee-stained one that my mother had lent me. Suffice to say, stained or not, the copy I 'inherited' now takes pride of place in my bookcase, and is dipped into and out of at a whim - and I'm all the better for being whim'ed. However, the down-side to Pam's poetry is reading it in a West Country accent and forgetting to switch back when one goes out in public . . . in Lancashire; although an up-side to this purchase experience is that my mother hasn't noticed the switch! Thanks, Pam, you write as I would wish to, and thanks, eBay, you've got me out of trouble . . . again.Read full review
