These songs are really good. But not up to the Abbey Road or Sargent Pepper Genius. George, John and Ringo played on those vinyl records. Paul and LInda fled to SCOTLAND and their farm after the split of the Beatles, and he sings of Heart of the Country, Ram, and other earthy themes. I'm an old rocker from the country so this fit me fine when released. The production does not hold up to Band on the Run level songs. These songs are fun to play, fun to sing along, Paul writes great lyrics: RAM holds up that tradition. The revelation with Ram is that Paul's solo music was getting stronger and stronger. Highly recommended.

At the time of RAM's release, McCartney was very much hated by music critics for breaking up the Beatles. This album was written off as bubble-gum pop... and even more despised for the fact that he shared credit with wife Linda. Reviews were personal attacks on him & her and not of the work on the record. With that knowledge, this album is flawless McCartney. Play this record unknowingly to anyone and it will automatically click. Rich in texture and color, few of his recordings have reached the level this one reaches. The opening track 'Too Many People' starts the song cycle of with a kick moving through odd songs like '3 Legs' and 'Ram On' which remind one of songs from the "White Album" era similar to 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road' & 'Wild Honey Pie'. Tracks like 'Dear Boy' with it's Brain Wilson vocal layers, to classic 'Uncle Albert/Adm. Halsey'... and the hard rocking 'Smile Away' play like they were recorded yesterday. McCartney's voice has never sounded stronger then it does here. The country twang of 'Heart of the Country' hits right on and 'Monkberry Moon Delight' showcases a raw vocal like the chorus of 'Oh, Darling!'. The carousel spin of 'Long Haired Lady' gives way to the proud vibrato of 'Backseat Of My Car' where he repeats the line, "We believe that we can't be wrong." There is hardly a miss on the entire album. And where the odd blend of Paul & Linda's vocal sound my have seemed off to critics of years gone by... it is just that sound that makes this record vibe the way it does. If you don't own this album... your collection is missing one of the 70's best records.Read full review
The sound quality of this cd is fantastic. Hearing Paul's breathing and fingers sliding on his guitar strings make you feel as though you are setting right in front of him. This has to be Paul's best effort ever. Keep in mind that this one was written in 1971. Ram is a slower tempo, relaxing, less busy, raw type of music. It has a earthy and almost country music sounding lyrics. Paul used stereo to great advantage in this one along with an almost homemade, from your garage or basement feel. I get the sensation I am getting a personal or one on one performance every time I listen to it. The only thing I do not like about it is that I can only rate it as a five out of five.
The beautifully crafted and executed tunes on Paul's debut solo album were largely and unfairly overlooked, presumably because people were mad about the Beatles' break-up. There is such a loveliness in these tunes and the background mental image of Paul finally getting some time to himself to commune with nature and find peace. "Monkberry Moon Delight" is one of the great pop songs ever--why doesn't exciting music make it onto the U.S. airwaves? Are U.S. audiences really content with the dull drivel that has dominated the airwaves since about 1970? Sorry to stereotype, but sedate old England plays far more interesting music. Is it an effect of the U.S. tapestry having so many threads to it that whoever's deciding what gets out there tries to reach out to too broad a spectrum? Who knows, but Paul McCartney's RAM is a breath of originality and exciting music any and every day.Read full review
