So good they named it twice. The band that were forever in the shade of more established, but less mercurial bands, Pavement were, and remain, one the truly influential bands of our time. In turn, inspired by Mark E Smiths various incarnations of The Fall, Malkmus and team, topped out with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. From the the painful solo journey of Silence Kit the album takes you all over the Pavement skill set. The highlights for me being the pain of the misfortunate tennis player in Stop Breathin and the knowing wink, wink nudge nudge of Range Life. To a first time Pavement listener this is probably less accessible than the less chaotic, Radiohead produced, Terror Twiglight, but then again that's their appeal. They were not mainstream and based on the merits of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain wouldn't know what mainstream was if you came up to them backstage and hit them over the head with it.Read full review
Pavement are one of those great bands that fell under the mainstream radar in the middle to late 90's. The late great John Peel was a fan , and I got into them after reading one of his books and looking at his all time top 50 songs. They blew me away , cleaver , funny , catchy with great guitars. I am still trying to land their 1st LP , which i believe is amazing , but crooked rain is well up their in my top 10 albums heard this year. It is fantastic how JP is still influencing music fans today , will there ever be another?
