Awful film. I watched 10 minutes of it. Will take it to a charity shop. Unfortunately I thought it was a different film with the same title.

This is an excellent Japanese movie about table tennis (ie. Ping Pong) that was based on a manga. It does a great job of conveying the action during the games, including a zen-like out-of-time sequence towards the end of the movie. The best thing I liked about this movie though was the character exploration and development, showing the different motivations of the characters and helping us the understand who they are and why they do what they do. It's a deep dive into the japanese culture and mindset, in a surprisingly simple sport. It's basically about a trio of high school ping pong players in 2 different schools, with a fantastic cast of well fleshed out supporting characters; the coach, rival players. It follows their progress through inter-school competitions, with flashbacks to when they were much younger. It's not a comedy, although it has funny moments in it; it's not a drama, it's not a sport movie. Like most Asian movies it defies categorisation. This reminds me a lot of Shall We Dance? (The Japanese original, not the Richard Gere American version). It's a movie about discovering who you are, realising your strengths and finding your heroes. Pretty deep for a sport movie. If you like movies that take you into a different culture, I highly recommend this little gem.Read full review
