I upgraded my EP1000 controller to this, the EP2, so mine was two generations defunct when I swooped it out, and swop is the right word: this series are pin compatible with earlier generations of the backboard, so you can just unclip the old & swing in the new. I have no special electrical knowledge but based on my background reading I just switched the power off at the mains, swooped the controller, and switched the power back on. It worked first time! One note however, the EP2 face plate has a tiny screw on the lower edge that is screwed in from the underside to really lock the faceplate in position. Working with the original, older backplate, there is no hole to receive that screw. Personally I found it quite unneccesary as the faceplate clicks into place & I didn't need the additional screw fixing, but others may feel differently, in which case changing the backplate too will be neccesary. My only minor criticism with the design is the software which leaves the LED screen on full, glaring out it's bright blue display 24/7 for no reason. It would be so easy to have the display on only when the controls are touched, and fade out a few seconds later. Why the designer's didn't go the extra inch to provide that is baffling. In conclusion, this us a great piece of kit & the ability to time hot water & central heating independently means this will pay for itself in less than it's first year!Read full review

Excellent product to replace older programmers. No wiring required saves a lot of labeling and messing about. Nice display and good quality buttons and sliders for HW and CH.

Not being a Central heating boffin, I was dreading changing my Daughter's Programmer. When I read that this unit would just fit onto the old back plate and replace the old broken unit (which looked very old) I was, I'll admit, cynical. That was it, though, in a nutshell. Switch off at the mains, lever the old unit off, and clip on the new one in it's place. Had to push it down quite hard to lock it in place, as the wires behind had to be pushed back, but it sprang into life when I powered back up, and after I'd programmed in the ons and offs took over where the old had left off. Great result, leaving plenty of time to read the paper!
