Pumpkinhead was the first and best film directed by the late, great make-up and special effects expert Stan Winston. It's a down-beat horror film set in the rural hills of America. Lance Henrikson gives an excellent performance as a grieving father whose young son is accidentally killed by some vacitioning young people from the city. Looking for revenge, he finds an ancient witch who helps him to raise up, with his own blood, the demon of vengence known as Pumpkinhead. From then on, things go very badly for all concerned as Pumpkhead is unleashed to do his work. The film isn't overly gorey and relies in large part on atmosphere and a very real sense of unease. Pumpkinhead is an excellent monster and looks great, but is wisely never over-used. Though not a big success, it has somehow spawned at least three sequels, but the original is the best. Pumpkinhead is not too easy to find on DVD, but I was fortunate enough to find a copy and am glad that I was able to do so. It's a good solid horror film that should appeal to anyone who enjoys this kind of film.Read full review
