RENAULT 5 TS MARK 1
GORDINI ALPINE STYLE
TS CHAMPIONSHIP RACE CAR
What we have here is my Mark 1 , 3 door , Renault 5 racer
Approx 1300-1400 cc engine, non turbo 4 cylinder. Not an Gordini or Alpine but looks like one!
I purchased this car in 1996 from the organiser of the
Daily Star Renault 5 ts championship who had prepared the car
It had already raced for many years in this championship and was originally white. When I purchased it it was bright Orange.
I raced the car in 1996 at all of the main circuits throughout the UK
Brands Hatch, Castle Combe,Snetterton,Cadwell, Oulton Park,Mallory,Croft, with various prangs, offs and finishes but mainly a great time !
The car was "readied" again for 1997 by Mark Fish Motorsport , Renault Racing experts, and 1997 was another year of racing, along with the Mighty Minis, Beetles and 2cvs. This time adding Donnington and Silverstone to the list of venues.Better results that year.
The car was then put into storage for the next few years as kids, house and learning to fly took over.
In 2004 Renault announced that it would hold a 30th celebration race of the Renault 5 races at Thruxton, all old racers invited including Barrie "Wizzo" Williams and Perry Mc Carthy-the first STIG !
A local garage was supposed to take all off the race parts including engine, roll cage, suspension (very low), seat, fire extinguisher etc off the old shell and put them into a pristine shell that I had aquired.
Neadless to say, they hadn't with 2 weeks to go before the race! So they removed the front wings, doors, tailgate off the other car and fitted them to my racer. Gave the car a quick spray with the correct Gordini/Alpine/French Racing Blue and I applied all of the period style sponsorship advertising that I had made especially.
However the garage had split the oil pressure gauge pipe and starved the engine of oil, this was the night before the race ! So my brother and I swapped the engine from the other car (A 1400cc Auto) that night and took the car down to Thruxton. The car was greatly admired in the paddock , it would turn over ok but we could not get it to fire for some reason, so the car was just put on display in the paddock.
To be honest, after that the car has just been in storage and not started.
The car is therefore a non-runner , a rolling shell but with the engine fitted.
I do have all of the parts for the original engine, which was ported, had a Kent Cam, K+N Filter etc and produced 85BHP at Pete Baldwins (Mini-legend) rolling road in Cambridge.
The car is a 4 speed manual.
The wheels are special steel "rostyle-ish" design that all of TS racers had to use , along with the Dunlop SP tyres. I have also listed 4 Gordini Alpine Alloys that I acquired from a friend of my brother who was the owner of the Renault 5 based Brooke Motor Company. These alloys are not included in this listing but I am sure we could come to some arrangement if you were interested.
The fire extinguisher was new in 1997, still "in the green" but I dont know what the regs are now. The seat and harness are all ok but again, might not be up to date.
I have loads of photos and videos ( In car and spectating) of me racing , somewhere.
The stickers were all made in the fashion of period/retro French racers ,ie Michelin Men, Magneti Mareli, Gitanes Cigarettes, Sev Marchal and Cibie. They are all vinyl stickers.
The car will obvioulsy need to be trailered away, it is based in South Norfolk. A chap I know might be able to deliver it but I would have to find out how much it would cost. The car will come with another set of wheels/tyres, loads of old parts including, suspension, driveshafts, wiring, cables, boxes and boxes ! and a well used Haynes manual!
The car is still eligible for Classic racing , I think in the Pre 93s, Group 1 Touring cars through CSCC, better check their website.
I dont think you would be invited to the Goodwood Festival of Speed or the Concours at the Villa d'Este though!
So there you are, end of an era for me and it will be very sad to see it go, my brother and I had lots of fun through the adversity of racing. We are moving house and I need to sell lots of old bits before we put the house on the market, I am keepimg my Renault 16 though.
The car could be restored but there are quite a few rust areas around the sills, windows, etc. You might just like it to look at, I did !
The car is currently SORN I believe
There is a very low reserve !
I would rather someone saw it first so they know what they are getting, and and info would be gladly given, email me through ebay or call me on 07802 448122.
Paypal is fine,or a deposit on Paypal and balance on collection is ok , but the price bidded is the price to pay, no negotiating on collection. Any cleared funds are acceptable, I could take a credit card payment as I have use of a card machine at work, but there would be a 1.5% fee.
I need to sell and remove the car by Mid March so this listing is going to be posted on both of the Renault Club sites and the R5Gordini site.
Thanks and good luck.
