I come from the world of full frame but wanted a travel camera that wouldn't get me noticed. If you look around for such a camera their aren't alot of options but what does appear on the list is the ricoh gr and it ticks every box possible. The image quality is near on comparable to my Sony a7rii with zeiss lens. It takes a while to get over the fact that for its size it has a much more professional agenda than it feels of looks. Yes it looks like an old camera from the 80s but the understated look is part of its charm. It doesn't even have a logo on the front of the camera. It's so intuitive to control and can be used fully one handed. It's fast to turn on and take a photo, Has incredible resolution and the lens is perfectly matched for the camera. I only shoot primes anyway so having a walk around point and shoot was the perfect solution, I didn't want to sacrifice image quality just because I wanted a smaller camera and fitting an apsc inside this camera was the way to go. The camera shoots in jpeg and raw with the dng file type so using the grii with wifi I can send raw to my phone and edit directly on my phone as Lightroom mobile supports dng. While travelling around this is a great advantage. The bad notes to point out are the battery life. You will need a few extra batteries as you don't get many shots out of a single battery. If your into street photographey this is a no brainer.Read full review

This camera is a little gem with many neat features that make it possible to be creative, work fast and control with one hand when required. Great features include snap focus that allows the focusing distance to be preset to avoid the need to auto focus, which helps in poor lighting conditions and where speed and discretion are of vital importance. Snap focus also includes a depth of field gauge so can also be used to determine the hyperlocal distance for landscapes etc when an image needs to be in sharp focus from the foreground to furthest distance. The ability to program the buttons enable the camera's functionality to be customised to personal requirements. These can also be stored as a preset so they can be set again in an instant, switching from a portrait to landscape for example. I recently used this camera alongside my Canon 5D II and 70-200 f/2.8 lens to photograph an event to switch between telephoto and wide angle within a few seconds. This worked really well and later when processing the images I did not notice notice a discernible difference in quality, although I was not attempting to do a direct in-depth comparison. I intend to use this camera as a take anywhere everywhere camera and use for travel photography that will be of professional quality suitable for picture libraries.Read full review

Love this little camera the quality for a camera of this size is brilliant, the controls are layed out very well and all the manual controls one could ask for in a camera of this class. If I was to think of a negative it would have to be it isn't dust or weather proofed.

The controls are similar to a digital SLR for adjustment of shutter speed and appature. There are also manual modes, and appature prioroty. It's much smaller than a DSLR - I had no idea how small until I got it. It's much easier to take places and keep in my pocket. The metering seems better than DLSRs I've tried - it copes well with bright backgrounds amd night shots. ISO can be varied from 100 (very sharp) to 1600 (grainy but useful). It's probably not for everyone becuase it has a fixed focal length lens. It's also a very wide angle lens, which takes some getting used to. Ignore reviews which complain about too much grain and noise at high ISO values. They are comparing high ISO with low ISO settings, and it's not surprising there's more noise at higher ISOs. Compared to high ISO film it's got very similar performance, and is quite acceptable.Read full review
