I've heard people comment "they're the best speaker i've ever heard" , the soundstage is breathtaking etc. .. etc . .. Tell you the honest truth!! They're just ok. You have to remember that they're old technology that back then was great. I believe the BBC originally wanted a monitor speaker that was small , could be used on location and could reproduce the human voice to its best way-way back then and the LS3/5a was born. The bass isn't great , just what you'd expect from speakers shoehorned inside a small enclosure. These days many small ported boxes with new technology at a fraction of the price will sound much better than the LS3/5a's. I was lucky , mine cost me nothing and they were a matched pair in immaculate condition. It was an original un-abused rogers pair and it was lovely to own them for 3-4 years testing them against other modern small speakers. I eventually sold them for £650 which was very nice. They're a valuable modern day antique and i must advise buyers contemplating owning them for their amazing sound , please please please listen to them first , they really are not sensational. Opt for an up to date small pair of bookshelf speakers , honestly if size is crucial and you wont look back. The LS3/5 a's are well made and good quality , as most products then were made well but they are definitely not worth the price they're going for. They're a bit inflated by their , history , fame and hype Read full review

So where do we start with the LS3/5a...I suppose at the design studio exec meeting at the BBC where discussion centred on the production of a bookshelf sized speaker that could be accommodated in the back of an A40 van...with a recording engineer and paraphernalia.....and so the LS3/5 was designed and produced...eventually morphing into the 3/5a....exceptionally analytical & precise and did the job of accurately recording 'outside broadcasts' for the BBC. BUT Is it a home listening monitor...well to a degree it is but far too tiring for extended listening...want to hear every flaw in a recording..yes the LS3/5a will produce it...want to totally relax with a dram and your favourite long player..then it's not for you....the final issue is cost...now fetching somewhere between £800 to several thousand for matched pairs...worth it ..NO...but any market stands or falls on the buying public and exacerbated by fanatical Far Eastern buyers the rise of the LS3/5a has been exponential....want my advice...need the combo' of T27/B110 then look for a nice condition pair of KEF Reference 101... similar sized speakers but warmer and cuddly and definitely worth accompanying that dram and a relaxing chair...and the price is a third of the 3/5a.... If you're after room filling bass heavy speakers to listen to hip hop, drum & bass, or modern pop music then these are probably not for you. I'm in no way an audiophile and I use them for monitors for video editing & they are fabulous. The sound is well rounded & well defined - the bass may be a little thin, but it sounds kinda 'correct' & balances perfectly with the rest of the range, overall the clarity of the sound is nothing short of breathtaking with no muddiness whatsoever, it all just sounds so sharp & clear. Remember, crank up the volume too much & the sound will quickly fall apart, but use them at the levels they were designed for & they sound sublime. Mine are an original Rogers matched pair so I obviously cannot comment on any of the 're-releases' and if you can pick up a good pair for less than £750 then they sound good for the price. Also don't forget that any good French polisher can make them look as good as new for less than £100 so you don't need to spend over £1000 for a 'mint' pair.Read full review

What people see in these speakers I have no idea, and anyone who spends a ridiculously large amount on them has more money than sense. I owned a pair many years ago, and eventually sold them because they did not satisfy my needs. I now have a pair of LS4a's and a pair of LS7t's, both of which are far better than the LS3/5a's. Still, if you want to throw your money away, buy a pair, but don't expect high quality sound from them. You would be paying for the status and not the sound quality. My little Castle Eden speakers are by far better in terms of sound quality.

I own a pair of Rogers Ls3/5a's and a pair of Rogers JR149's and I am always stunned by the fact how such a simple design could deliver such an amazing sound. Never dull, never overly present, but just enough. The sound - when played with e.g. earlier Quad systems - is very realistic and musical. The speakers are definitely not overvalued. This is not only an icon of its time, it also delivers (this is maybe where the comparison with the Golf GTI MKI stops) and that makes it worth every penny you pay for it.
