I bought this on a trusted friend's recommendation as he ahd studied the Civil War especially for modelmaking. This is a 700 page novel, with a hero on either side. They are NOT in the mould of Richard Sharpe of the napoleonic Wars, and are not involved in extreme action on every page. However , there is much action set during and around the battles, and the plot rolls comfortably along. Where this novel scores is in its constantly turning to describing the Civil War as it proceeds, both with the major events but also with how the war affected the ordinary people, making it an excellent and easy to absorb aid to study. One of the best I have read, and there are many which do not succeed. One for every school history course........if such is still taught. .
Lindsey has very cleverly interwoven personal experiences of the period with the dramatic events of the civil war
