To Shakespeare aficionados, I've watched Richard 111 on VHS for years now and it's wearing out, so decided to upgrade to Blu-Ray/DVD, I knew this version of Shakespeare's Richard 111 starring Lawrence Olivier was my favourite, and will remain so but now enhanced quality & sound makes for better viewing.

Olivier's performance is extra-ordinary. Clearly some Becket-lovers have struggled with it but to most of us this was the defining performance of this play for several decades.Has anyone else made a better production? The only better production I have encountered is with Robert Stephens playing Richard and that is almost impossible to find! At the price this normally goes for, between £2 and £3, there is no excuse not to buy it and take the chance. For me this is a truly historic production and one I have seen well over 10 times in the last 20 years. For you it may not work so well - WARNING this is not the best version to study if you're doing your GCSEs! Over to you!!

The memories I had of this production were very positive...it has not aged well. I found his performance to be understandably dated and not particularly pleasant to watch.
This is a Classic movie dating from 1963. I remember seeing it screened then and it is well worth revisiting again. This DVD transcript is well done. The great British actors of the period come across with their lines clearly. Shakespeare's play will continue to be read, and viewed for generations to come. Recommended, if only for nostalgia reasons, but valuable to the new viewer as well. R.W.
