A lot has been said about Richard Llewelyn not actually coming from a mining community, so what! It is still a beautifully constructed story of a Welsh mining family, its sentimental yes, true to life? Yes to a degree I would imagine, I come from a mining family so it's close to my heart, what stories are 100% truthful anyway? Give me sentimental anytime, what's wrong with that? If you liked the John Ford 1940's film version or the TV adaptation from the 1970s with Stanley bakeryou will love this book, its a beautiful emotive story, highly recommended!

brilliant book compelling reading especially as i was born and brought up in a small welsh mining community this book has a real habit of hitting the nnail on the head in the sense thats exactly how things in the welsh valleys worked out and even today the scars are still there and the wounds still open and sore
