Like most Roberts products the RD-14 is a superb little product.Clear display, simple controls with really good quality sound. This the second RD14 I've purchased so I could hook it into my stereo that didn't have DAB.It does draw a lot more power than FM/AM models, but it is a price worth paying.
This RD-14 'Sport' radio is excellent for mobile DAB reception due to it's lightness, diminutive dimensions and economical power consumption. It is easily small enough to fit in a pocket and uses 2 x high-capacity rechargeable Ni-MH AA cells (with a minimum rating of 2200mAh I'd say) at a very economical rate. There is no built-in speaker or dedicated aerial... It is perfect for listening to, for example, Test Match Special (which is usually broadcast on the BBC DAB station 5Live sports Extra) whilst at a match with headphones on. Reception quality is fine, using the headphone lead as the aerial, but if signal break-up occurs you have the option of switching to FM; except you do of course lose access to DAB-only stations... The illuminated multi-line LCD is simply huge and displays a wealth of information: either date/time/station/battery level/signal strength/scrolling DAB station information or just the station with full-page DAB station text (called DLS). One minor irritation is that the screen illumination is only available by pressing a button - not very handy if you just want to check what's being displayed ! There are just 4 knobs: on/off, volume up/down and a multi-purpose jog-wheel which accesses available DAB stations by it being rotated or settings/modes by first pushing it in - it works very well. Date/Time are set automatically, there is an auto shut-off facility and the jog-wheel can be disabled (to avoid accidental changes) by holding it in for a few seconds. For some inexplicable reason the radio doesn't come with a case but a power adaptor is supplied. I can safely say that the power adaptor will NEVER get used (it's meant to be a mobile radio after all !); it would have been far more useful to get a case and/or a set of high-capacity rechargeable Ni-MH AA cells... *** I have found the perfect case for this radio. It is a hard-shell design, and exactly the right dimensions to hold the radio on one side (in a dedicated pouch) and the headphones/2 x spare batteries on the other side (in a dedicated pouch). It is sold by 'Boots the Chemist' and is meant to be for a digital camera; mine is blue in colour and it cost me £8.99 (Jun 08). It has a zip closure, a small carry-handle, a belt-loop and the material resists water. *** So, all-in-all an excellent purchase with few competitors of comparable quality.
