It's a shame that Ross McElwee isn't better known and receive more acclaim. His documentaries are like no one else's. His "crew" is usually just him with his camera, and, a soft-spoken, unassuming man, he always is part of the final film. They can be at once funny and moving. His best known work is Sherman's March, which is no doubt his masterpiece. And don't be put off my its length. Basically an homage to (modern) Southern women, it's so entertaining that time just flies by. But his earlier (and later) films also are quite good. Check him out; if you like documentaries, you won't be disappointed.
