This in reality was a movie that shouldn't have happened......blah, blah, blah. We've all heard the Joss speak about how this was the cancelled TV show that has become a movie, but could the excellent small screen show with all its little charms and quirks really transfer on to the big screen......er well no if you believe the box office. This film compared to most its action counterparts flopped. Its takings were nothing to write home about, but you get the idea that this was never about ratings, don't get me wrong Joss, his crew and his actors all would have loved this to be a huge success (mainly because it would have probably spawned two big screen sequels, now we will probably get a couple of sequels that go straight to DVD), but you always got the felling during all the hype that they really wanted to be doing this for themselves and for the fans. Okay so to the film itself, no major selling points to people outside the Whedon-verse, no big stars no big budget etc. But the film itself is absolutely brilliant, the cast has brought all the passion and togetherness from the TV show over to the movie. And if summer Glau doesn't become a huge star it would be a great shame, the passion and energy she expels on to the screen particularly in the set pieces is excellent. The Story itself is straight out from the TV show but is not so heavy handed that firefly virgins won't understand the plot. Unlike your traditional actioners Whedon doesn't just jump from set piece to set piece, he uses his god like talent to break it up with fantastic pieces of wit and humor as well as the tense and dramatic. There is nothing quite like a Whedon script and for someone who hasn't sampled it this is your opportunity. Its just a real shame that this did not receive the box office gross it deserved as a firefly trilogy could have really allowed us to forget the really rather poor resent showings of Mr Lucas' famous franchise. Heres hoping Joss keeps pushing the Serenity universe, and keeps bringing us these sort of classics.Read full review
Serenity is the follow-up film to Firefly, a unique and much-loved tv series. If you loved Firefly, Serenity is for you. If you haven't seen Firefly, read on. I won't quote you the story- it's widely availible on the internet. I will tell you why you should watch it. The characters are perhaps Serenity's best feature- they're interesting, diverse and most importantly, real to life. As bizzare as they are, their choices, speech, loves and hates all seem perfectly real. They cast range from loveable, cheerful Kaylee, the ship mechanic to River, a slightly insane genius. Serenity's second best feature is it's mix of styles. On the shop shelf, you'll find it under sci-fi- it's set in space and the future after all. But it's also got tones of old westerns, heist movies and comedy. And it does it without letting any of them crowd the others or run over the story. Try it and then, if you haven't already, give Firefly a go too.Read full review
Comedy; Action; Epic Adventures - and sci fi - Serenity somehow managed to pull it off. With a mix of witty humour, inspiring landscapes and a well written story line, scenerenity is a must see for any sci fi fan - for any person who just wants to see a good film for that matter. Serenity Rocks! Dislikes: None Why I bought it? - Looked good - was good.
