This was the film generally considered to be Vivien Leigh's big break. Her cockney accent is an embarassment but her flawless, striking, spirited beauty sees her through and there are glimmers of a star in waiting in her performance as a street urchin turned stage star in 1930's London. Charles Laughton excels with a surprisingly modern portrayal of the man she leaves behind her when the good life beckons. The highspot is the waiflike Miss Leigh dancing for her own enterainment in an empty mansion in semi-darkness, believing herself to be alone.
