First an admission....Watching the DVD was actually my first time viewing Enterprise. I'll admit that the cheesy title music and Scott Bakula (who in my mind didn't seem right as captain) was enough to prevent me trying out Enterprise when it was originally aired on UK television. I could never accuse previous Star Trek series of being cheesy and I feared that Enterprise would be just that. Oh how I was wrong! After watching TNG, DS9 and Voyager (all episodes) on DVD, I needed a Star Trek fix and Enterprise did not disappoint. Since Enterprise is the most recent series (and since Paramount don't seem to have penny pinched in producing the series) production values are excellent. A Star Trek TV series in widescreen (fantastic)! Ships look more real (both inside and out) and as for that title music I now love it (the titles themselves also show off the high production standards). The stories themselves explore Starfleet's earliest encounters with alien cultures and as always are written with sensitivity to previous series/story lines. The scripts avoid gushing sentimentality whilst retaining Star Trek's empahasis towards the moral dilemmas that explorers face when coming in to contact with vastly different cultures. Consequently they point towards the formation of a Federation/Prime Directive. Whilst individually the characters do not have the same appeal as say Worf, Quark, Data, Picard or Kirk (for example) they are all the more believable for it and remain somewhat easier to identify with. I could go on longer but would prefer to watch the show. In short, if you love Star Trek, you'll love this.Read full review
I always thought it would be difficult to go back in time before the original Star Trek. To my delight, the first Season of Enterprise actually pulled it off. With some excellent characters - Dr Phlox, T'pal, trip and the compelling captain Archer, not to mention brilliant shots of the ship! As usual, great attention to detail has avoided too many unanswered questions and reassuringly, the crew cannot automatically speak to an alien race on first contact. Add to this a few raunchy scenes during decontamination from visiting alien worlds and it makes for a great start to the series. The only shame was that they never made seasons 5,6 and 7.
i already had this season on VHS, this item was purhcased after i purhchased the consecative seasons 2, 3 and 4 in the silver boxsets. as seasons 2,3 and 4 where not released on VHS (which is annoying and also unfair) i was forced to purhces the other 3 seasons on dvd. i decided to purches season 1 of Enterprise on dvd in the same boxset as the other 3 so the it looked better on display with my other titles. i would have prefered to purhcase all seasons of this on VHS but as companys ar so arrogant to assume that everybody wants dvd instead of VHS when this is not true then peopel are therfore forced into purchasing the dvd versions insted of what format the want it on namely VHS. i only thefore purhcase season 1 of Enterprise on dvd so that it went better with the other 3 seasons that they only released on dvd. i do think that these companys should realses every title on both VHS and dvd. especialy if they have started to release titles on VHS such as in this case the first season of Enterprise ane other 3 should therfore be available on VHS and not just released on dvd only. this is not only a con on the VHS customer but it also lulls the VHS customer into a false sence of security when purchasing VHS titles as the VHS customer assumse that if a series is relased on VHS the the remainder of the series is going to be. i do not like dvds and would cjoose the VHS title over the dvd title every time. the same applies to films with sequels if the first 1 is relaeased on VHS then the following ones should therfore also be released on VHS and not as the companys do by only releasing them on dvd. apart from all that the set that i have purchased is OK but i would have prefered not to have to purchase them becuase other seasons where not released on VHS so in effect i was conned into purchaseing the dvd versions of season 1 as well as the VHS version.Read full review
I decided to buy Star Trek Enterprise because what little bits I caught on terrestrial TV looked good - I was not disappointed when I watched the DVD's. The cast are great and the special effects superb. I shall now purchase season two.
Only ever bothered with the original and next generation series, but caught an episode of enterprise and loved it. A great prequel with the crew trying out their new toys and first contacts prior to the prime directive. Not too military. Love the theme tune sung by russell watson.
