Despite her beauty and acting talents, if Scarlett possess a significant vocal talent, this CD doesn't allow it to shine. The booklet notes (written by one one of the band members) talks about her "crystal clear voice" - but if it's there you can barely hear it, as the vocals are buried in the complicated and multilayered music from the band - they are so quiet they could almost be the backing vocal track! She sings in lower registers, as if everything she is trying to express is being restrained, and it's very difficult to hear the words. The band say that Scarlett is the focus of attention - but it sounds more like the band are in some egotistical contest, each trying to make their part the most noticeable element of the mix. Either that or Scarlett was so nervous of her voice being heard, that she had herself turned down and pushed to the back of the mix. If you want to listen to Tom Waits covers, I heartily recommend you look elsewhere. In fact I'd recommend "Temptation" by Holly Cole, where the songs are sung very clearly and with a basic but effective backing (typical of most of Holly Cole's work). There's a bit of an overlap in tracklisting between the Holly CD and Scarlett CD, and the comparison is breathtaking. Can I give any recommendation at all? Well, there are not even any particularly good photos of Scarlett in the booklet (although one of her and the band suggests either the band are all giants, or she's not as tall as one might think), so it's hard to recommend this CD even to one of her fans. So maybe it's just me. Maybe this CD is just so uber cool that I just don't get it. But on balance, I suspect not...Read full review
