A friend recomended getting a 'rotary' spreader, as oppose to a 'drop' spreader. This is because 'drop' spreaders tend over-dose the lawn or clog, and it's difficult to stop the flow when you get to the end of a row, or when you make a turn. This rotary spreader has a trigger control to quickly stop the flow. Also it spreads the feed granuals widely and evenly - over a three or more foot radius - so each 'line' you walk over your lawn spreads over a six foot width. This means it doesn't take many 'runs' to do your lawn, so it's super-quick to do. As many weed-and-feed granular products require rain or watering-in, my friend does his feeding just at the first sprinkling of rain - he's able to dash all over the lawn quickly before the heavy rain starts! And you can walk at a brisk pace, as the spreading is as fast or slow as you go. I've tried soluble feeds or liquid feeds you dilute, but spreading granular feed (which is easy to store and requires no mixing) is so quick and easy with this spreader, it is so much better. Make sure you check the spread rate on the box and check you set the correct number on the spreader's trigger - I recommend checking online. So that's the advantage of a rotary spreader - and this particular product by Scotts is of real quality and is great value. It took minutes to set up and I'm sure it will last years!Read full review

The good bits. It is cheap and it does spread fairly evenly. Easy to assemble out of the box. Easy to use and to adjust the flow rate The bad bits. It is cheaply made and after 30 minutes use three of the factory fitted bolts had slackened off and one of the steel nuts is now somewhere in my lawn -waiting for my mower to find it. No height adjustment for the handle if you are 6ft7in or 4ft 7in. The poorly designed container does not empty properly as it has a flat bottom rather than a sloping bottom (like feed hoppers have been made since the Egyptians) This retains the last three or four handfuls of fertiliser in the corners of the box - just annoying.

Broadcasts over a wide area so gets the job done quickly and evenly. Easy to know the setting if using Evergreen products. This is the second one I've had - the cable on the first one snapped (and could do with being of better quality).

The spreader looks a bit flimsy for the price but performs well. The settings could be simplified - you have to be quite inventive to get it right if you're using a product not on the list in the instructions. Over all I was reasonably satisfied with the spreader and would recommend it.
