I had been researching circumaural headphones for the past few weeks when I came across good prices on these HD 595s. Originally set on some 555s, I picked these up before of the nearly negligeable price difference. I will start by saying if you've only used standard earbuds or default headphones that came with your MP3 player, you'll be overwhelmed. The clarity on these headphones is amazing: clear highs, defined mids and accurate bass. Couple it's open, circumaural design with some high-quality encoded tracks (some recommend 160 kbps+... I just use lossless now) and you will hear your old music in a new light. In drum solos I can hear the clear left-to-right progression of the drummer actually hitting the toms in that very direction. Even grungy rock music will sound more vibrant: The clear tones define the music as a grouping of individual instruments instead of one muddled sound. In terms of hardware, I have only had experience using these out of my PC motherboard (Realtek HD 885 codec) and my 1G iPod Touch. The sound does seem brighter/more vibrant coming from the PC -- surely a matter of the kind of juice a PC with a dedicated power source can bring vs. li-ion iPod. Contrary to popular belief, these headphones and a few other high-end 'phones can be driven by MP3 players to acceptible volume. Compared to my previous set of Sennheiser PMX-60's (by no means a slouch for their price), I have to use about 50-60% more amplification to drive the same volume on the iPod. The higher impedence can be blamed for that, but either way I wouldn't use open headphones on the go for obvious reasons... Nor is the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter very MP3 player friendly. Overall, a welcome addition to my growing addiction and a great introductory set of headphones into the world of Hi-Fi. Would buy again. Pros: + Great sound reproduction; accurate and smooth + Can be driven to great volumes + Good looking and practical; rugged + Comfortable to wear for extended periods of time; lightweight + Can be used by MP3 players if so desired (stand-alone amp. recommended) + Long cord + User replacable cord & ear pads Cons: - High MSRP (349) - Requires a stand-alone amp. to really shine (same can be said about any high-end 'phones) - Soundstage is a little lackingRead full review
I honestly cannot emphasize the clarity of these headphones. Bass is good and never distorted, Mids are well balanced, and Highs are very detailed. I use them for everything, Movies, Music, Games, well, anything with audio actually, and they just make them sound spectacular. It's been a while since i listened to my music collection, but with the HD595's everything sounded like new and beyond better than I could have imagined. All the new instruments and effects that I have never noticed before where easily audible. They are also incredibly comfortable to wear, so you can have them on for hours straight and won't even realize that you're wearing them. My only two complaints are the following: Any other pair of headphones (unless equivalent or better) will simply start sounding lousy and you can't tolerate listening to them anymore. Second, forget those 96 and 128Kbps MP3's that you downloaded off Kazaa or Napster. The HD595 are so accurate and detailed that all the MP3's artifacts due to their low quality will start sounding so bad over these headphones that will simply become unbearable. My final thought is that these are one of the best pair of headphones that money can buy, and if treated well they can be one of your best and most loyal companions. Enjoy re-discovering you music.Read full review
These are truly outstanding headphones. The sound quality is equivalent to the best from Grado, but MUCH more comfortable, so much so that you hardly notice your wearing them. Absolutely the most comfortable headphones I have ever tried. Warm, rich tones, exceptional sound detail, clarity, and range. Every time I use these, I am constantly amazed by what these can do, they are so delicious to use. I find myself listening to my music collection all over again, they bring out a whole new level of sound and and detail. With audiobooks I can hear every word clearly. Spoken words come across like you are standing next to a real person talking directly to you, very three-dimensional and quite stunning.
the sound seems a bit far away, the bass is weak, cancels NO noise at all (seems to even amlify the computer's hum), everyone around you can hear what youre listening to due to the fact its an open design, the highs and mids are a bit tingy, its an ok buy for the price, but there's probably better out there... maybe they will sound better after the burn-in period, ive used them for about 50 hours so far. Also, the plug for it is unwieldy (its a 1/4 inch with an 1/8 of an inch ATTACHMENT, not the other way around) so dont expect to comfortably carry these around. also, the adapter is quite large and enjoys having fights with the other cables in the back (almost squishing them to the sides). the cable itself is long, very long, too long, id much prefer a looped cable like the sony MDR-500's and such. also, dont be fooled by the pretty color in the pictures here.. these things are almost gold in real life. i was quite dissapointed with that too. one thing i do love is the sounds balance, the stereo sound (left/right) sounds PERFECT on these. good buy, but shop around for better. try some out first.Read full review
upon trying them on (20 minutes after i've got them) my wife just declared eminent domain and confiscated them, i had to buy a second pair. response is phenomenal, i've started with klaus schultze (return to beyreuth) and treble goes crystal clear way up to 28,000 hz or so. then i've listened to szeryng playing bach violin sonatas. when playing a third cord, your jaw kind of starts vibrating and you can clearly hear the fifth, it's like you're playing yourself. very comfortable for long periods of time, even for a head like mine, kind of xx large. if you're really into music, you've got to get this
