Superb movie from the 1990s, made some years after Strictly Ballroom, Shall We Dance? Is a gentle story with an abundance of colourful characters with their own challenges. It’s actually funnier than most dance movies, while moving at a more sedate and romantic pace, aggression-free, and feels good from start to finish.

Adorable and very enjoyable film. Was asked to buy this by someone who never told me there were 2 versions of the film. They wanted the Lopez/Gere version and not this one. Watched it with apprehension but within 10-15 mins got into it and actually heard myself laughing at the embarrassing and humiliating positions the chap trying to get out of his hum-drum life suffered, in his quest to be near the gorgeous and enigmatic young dance instructor. However the real comedy comes from his Ruud-Gullit-style-wig-wearing workmate. Who expresses his passion for dance with facial expressions of agony, esctasy and aggression worthy of any Shakesperian actor. Bought the Lopez/Gere film just days later and looked forward to a similar viewing experience, though the dialogue was often the same, the differences in the characters was grusome, with Gere far too confident to play someone embarressed to do dance & Lopez lacking the class and elegance of her Japenese equivilent. As for the other characters, not good. Was well pleased when my friend took the remake and left me the original version. 5 stars to the original, 3 to the remake. Genuine family viewing and entertaining too, well worth watching.Read full review
