Nice, rare and fun game :) A must to have for dreamcast owners. The legend begin in this game and it continues...
This is a game EVERY person who loves video games should play at least once in their lives. Serious gamers should own it, and fans of the game should be clamouring for Sega to make the third one. Witnessing your fathers murder at the very beginning of the game sets the cinematic tone for the whole game and still looks good by todays standards. It is easy to watch this game and dismiss it in favour of games like Heavy Rain. However those games today would not exist if not for Shenmue. Consider this game was made in the late 90's, originally for the Sega Saturn before being canned and reworked for Dreamcast then finally released in 1999. Years before games such as Grand Theft Auto 3 still hadn't been made. The true 3D open world experience was issued in by Sega with Shenmue, More involving, more detailed and more diverse than any other game for the next decade. Playing as Ryo Hazuki you start your first day searching you local neighbourhood for clues as to your father's murderers. Taking a queue from zelda and questioning the local NPC's to find the next clue and the next until you are equipped with enough knowledge to enter your local town. Your investigations take you through experience after experience from daily karate training, helping old people as side quests, protecting kids from local gangs, defending yourself from muggers and attackers, probing further and further into the shadowy organisation behind Lan Di, your fathers murderer, helping your friends, acquiring a job at the local harbour to get nearer to people with connections who can help you. The closer you get to the truth, the further it seems to be and the number of people who want to kill you gets larger. Ultimately coming down to showdown a la Kill Bill where you are fighting through the harbour alone against over 80 assailants and pushing what the karate skills and techniques you have learnt throughout the game in your home dojo to the limit. Graphically this game still looks impressive, especially if you fork out £25 for a VGA adapter for your Dreamcast so you can hook it up to the PC input on your LCD widescreen TV. It plays slowly until the fight scenes and the the fighting is as frenetic as any 3D beat em up as the game engine is taken straight from the arcade version of Virtua FIghter 3. I'm getting bored of writing now, but I cannot recommend this game enough and is up there as an all time great along with: Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Red Dead Redemption and Final Fantasy VII.Read full review
Shenmue is a timeless adventure , a unique game with a distinct character. The Storyline although simple ,digs deep into the human soul ,one of the know characteristics of Japanese RPG's. Shenmue's gameplay is very addictive and can be enjoyed by almost everyone. On an age of "carelessly" produced games , the "play once and forget it " type , Shenmue stands the test of time to become one of the most deepest spiritual experiences ever offered by a videogame. Dont think about it , just buy yourself a copy , thank me later. I can guarantee you will buy Shenmue II right after finishing this one.(another masterpiece) P.S : ) Thanks Yu Suzuki and AM2 TEAM.
i never really play games like this, im more of a racing game fan. but the story on this games is brilliant and it sucks you right in,, i have got right into this game now and i am set on completing this game. would recomend this game to anyone as it is a fun adventure game.
Much sought after, but more of these games are out there than the usual thrown around 'rare game' description. great game, believe the hype.
Twelve years later, there is no other game that make you feel that you are a normal person in a real town, with real people doing their lifes. Shenmue is more than a videogame.
